Guide for mums: How to drink your coffee warm
New Baby

Ah well… we all know that yack… ehm, I mean yummy taste when you finally find a 30 second break in your busy life to drink your coffee (which was made couple of hours ago). There’s been so many jokes about it, FB cartoons and calls of desperation. Maybe you gave up and say: “Pha! Who cares about silly coffee anyway!” But deeply inside you’re crying for help.

What about that coffee?

To keep it brief, as we (mums) don’t have much time to spare, let’s go straight to the point. There are 2 reasons why you need your coffee and why you want it to be warm:

  • You need your daily caffeine intake. With almost no sleep for as long as you can remember and all days on your feet, coffee is probably the one thing that’s keeping you alive. No, food and water are no longer number one on your primary physiological needs list. Without your coffee you would be fast asleep like sleeping beauty and the entire world would collapse.
  • You need some time for yourself. And this is the real point here. Ever since you’ve become a mum, you’ve been dreaming of having some time just for you. So the question is: is there any chance of making this dream come true?

Change your attitude towards coffee

Drinking a nice, hot… (No, no, no! Never say hot, safety first, let’s just say warm). WARM cup of coffee is a magical symbol of quiet moment in your life where you can enjoy being you again instead of being the cook, cleaning lady, referee, nurse or ______ (complete as you wish).

I can tell you, that after couple of years with no such quiet moment in my life, the feeling coffee brings when it’s still warm and when I can sit while drinking it, is truly wonderful. It doesn’t need to be quiet in the house. I don’t need to be by myself or with friends. All I need is my warm cup of coffee to make my day.

By reviewing 2 points mentioned earlier, I realize that coffee gets to the new level in my priority list. It is no longer less important than other things as it used to be. Therefore, I make a goal to drink my coffee warm and I fulfil this goal almost every day.

How to drink your coffee warm?

To complete your goal of drinking coffee while it’s still warm, you should move it higher on your priority list and lower on your expectations list. This means that if there is something you have to do no matter what, try to squeeze in drinking your coffee into it too. E.g. you’re feeding your baby every day and usually you’re sitting at the table while doing it. So why not to include your coffee to this activity? Multitasking is one of mum’s super-powers, right? You cannot expect to have quiet time while feeding your baby (and drinking coffee), but at least it’s still warm and it reminds you of the great feeling you used to have when you had quiet moments. By the way, you are having a coffee time with your best buddy, aren’t you?

Stop chasing after “time for yourself” when your baby is napping. It’s just too frustrating when it’s not working out the way you wished. Find some other way of having a warm cuppa… and make an extra one in case you find few spare minutes. It will be a great bonus and a reward for all your hard work.

Option number two: go out with a friend!

This one involves a bit more organization around it. You need to get someone to mind your little sweethearts for you during the very same time as your friend is available to meet you. But the result you get is priceless. Make sure you do this every so often. You truly need and also deserve time for yourself.

I wish you good luck and many warm cups! … don’t forget to let me know how did it work for you.

About Jarmila

I’m a mom of three (8, 6, 4). For me, having kids means my biggest dream coming true. It’s blessing from God to have them. Although, it still applies, that children are best when they’re asleep. And on photos, too. Every night when they’re all 3 fast asleep, I go to check on them and I watch them with a smile on my face. Their breath is calm and their little faces are so beautiful and gentle. I think of all the funny things they’ve said and done that day. Or even naughty little things they’ve done. I just smile and enjoy the moment and the quiet in the house :)
